You know that feeling when you step into a new situation, experience or even relationship and you feel really confident, connected and grounded? Maybe you planned for the moment, did all of your homework, vetted out all possible outcomes, thought about it, meditated on it, prayed about it, all ahead of time. READY FOR ANYTHING, RIGHT?
What about the times when you're unexpectedly faced with a new experience, transition or change? When you have to make a quick (important) decision that you weren't quite prepared for or you're faced with unexpected conflict? Does your confidence and connection slip away? I bet it's still there - it's just not in our nature to tap into it, when we aren't expecting to. Our nature is to protect, to defend or to panic.
But what if there was a way to train our bodies to come back to it? To feel our feet beneath us, the vitality in our breath, our body and to tap into what our intention is for the quick moment ahead. This is what I'm referring to as ANCHORING first. When the house is a mess, the kids are screaming and crying and your patience is nearly non-existent - anchor first, then set an intention. I promise you, it can wait. The 30 seconds it takes you to anchor first, then to set an intention will be well worth it.
In yoga, we speak a lot to reACTING vs. reSPONDING and the importance of doing so with consciousness - which I stand behind. But this philosophy allows us to also bring our body into the picture. To feel connected, confident and grounded before choosing how to show up in the situation. AND it takes awareness and practice - you will fail (I'll be the first to admit that I have many times). But it gets easier. We are re-training our bodies to feel safe, when we are safe. To feel connection, rather than threat. And to chose to move with our own intention first.
In doing so, how can you symbolize to your body that you are ANCHORING? I chose to place a hand on my heart as my body's reminder.... OK, we're going to anchor first. You can feel your pelvis, rock your feet back and forth, a hand on your belly - whatever it takes, it'syour practice. When I feel my breath, then I know I'm present and I remind myself of my intention.
A little HEART CHECK - "Bailey, are you with me? I'm with you. I am you and you are me".
Any situation - big or small - is worth your time, your efforts, your energy and your attention, if you're choosing to go through it. Are you willing to try?
